New one-way system from Saturday
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, AUG. 20. The first phase of the Central Area Traffic
Management Plan (new one-way system) conceived by the Bangalore
City Traffic Police along with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike
(BMP) and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, will
be implemented on August 25 from 7 p.m.
The one-way system, drawn up in coordination with the Bangalore
Agenda Task Force (BATF), is based on data available from studies
by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), the Rail
International Limited (RITES), the Elevated Light Rail Transit
System (ELRTS), the CIRT and the Metro bus project.
A scientific study of the City's traffic was undertaken with
funds from the BATF, and a traffic expert was consulted.
The plan, according to a City police release, involves a
combination of one-way traffic management, synchronised signals
and passovers, in conjunction with pedestrian facilities. This
will be integrated into the proposed flyover system.
The area proposed to be covered under the one-way scheme is bound
by Rajajinagar Entrance in the West, Ulsoor in the East, South
End Circle in the South, and Mehkri Circle in the North. It
covers about 100 km. of road network and nearly as many road
intersections.
The area has been divided into five traffic regions. The Ananda
Rao Circle traffic region comprises S.C. Road, Nagappa Road,
Nehru RUB, Shivananda Circle, Race Course Road and roads in the
Majestic area, while the Hudson Circle region includes K.R.
Circle, Nrupatunga Road, District Office Road, Post Office Road,
Hudson Circle, Kasturba Road, Vittal Mallya Road and Raja Ram
Mohan Roy Road.
The Queen's Road region includes Palace Cross Road, Miller Road,
Queen's Road, Cunningham Road, Balekundri Circle, Raj Bhavan
Road, T. Chowdaiah Road and Basaveshwara Circle, and the M.G.
Road region includes Cubbon Road, Infantry Road, M.G. Road,
Trinity Circle, Residency Road, Richmond Circle and Ulsoor. The
Minerva Circle region comprises R.V. Road, Diagonal Road, Vani
Vilas Road and Minerva Circle area.
In the first phase, the one-way system will be introduced on 12
major roads, including Nrupatunga Road, Kasturba Road, Vittal
Mallya Road, Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road/Sampangi Tank Road, Devanga
Hostel Road, New Mission Road, J.C. Road, N.R. Road, District
Office Road, Old Post Office Road, Palace Road and Seshadri Road.
Under the plan, Nrupatunga Road will be made one-way from K.R.
Circle to Police Corner. Motorists on Nruputunga Road can take a
right turn to District Office Road (K.G. Road) and proceed
towards Mysore Bank Circle. They can also proceed towards
Kasturba Road via Hudson Circle, towards Subbaiah Circle via
Hudson Circle and Devanga Hostel Road, and towards City Market
via Town Hall.
Kasturba Road will be a one-way stretch from Hudson Circle to
Siddalingaiah Circle. Motorists on the road can proceed towards
Queen's Statue Circle, take a free right towards Vittal Mallya
Road, and proceed to Raja Ram Mohan Roy Circle and Richmond
Circle.
The one-way system will be introduced on Vittal Mallya Road from
Siddalingaiah Circle to Raja Ram Mohan Roy Circle. Raja Ram Mohan
Roy Road and Sampangi Tank Road will be made one-way from Raja
Ram Mohan Roy Circle to Hudson Circle. Motorists (light motor
vehicles only) on the road intending to proceed towards Lalbagh
Road can enter Devanga Hostel Road. The Devanga Hostel Road will
continue to be one-way as it is now.
The New Mission Road will also continue to be one-way. J.C. Road
will continue to be one-way up to Town Hall Circle.
Motorists on N.R. Road can take a free left to District Office
Road at Police Corner and proceed towards Mysore Bank Circle,
K.R. Circle and Vidhana Soudha. Those intending to go to
Shivajinagar and M.G. Road can take a right at Police Corner and
proceed via Hudson Circle and Kasturba Road. At Hudson Circle,
vehicles are allowed inside Cubbon Park, but they can only
proceed towards K.R. Circle and Nrupatunga Road. The movement of
vehicles from Central Library towards Gopala Gowda Circle will
not be allowed.
District Office Road will be made one-way from Police Corner to
Mysore Bank Circle. Motorists can take a free right at Mysore
Bank Circle, proceed towards K.R. Circle and Vidhana Soudha.
Old Post Office Road will be made one-way from Mysore Bank Circle
to K.R. Circle. There is no entry for vehicles from K.R. Circle
to Maharani's College Circle.
The one-way system on Palace Road from Maharani's College to
Mysore Bank Circle will continue. Seshadri Road will be one-way
up to K.R. Circle. There will be no entry for vehicles from K.R.
Circle to Maharani's College Circle. The movement of heavy goods
vehicles and slow-moving vehicles has been restricted on these
roads.
The new system is expected to lead to ``maximisation of traffic
infrastructure'' such as Sirsi Circle flyover as well as Richmond
Circle Passover, and integration of the system with the interim
and long-term development plans.
Once implemented, the system will help bring down pollution,
reduce delays at junctions and ease traffic congestion.
