Reservation for women in legislatures stressed
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, AUG. 20. The Pondicherry Assembly Speaker, Mr. M. D.
R. Ramachandharan, has stressed the need for providing
reservation for women in legislatures.
Inaugurating a special campaign organised by the Nehru Yuva
Kendra and the Corporation for Development of Women and
Handicapped at Tirukanoor near here today, he said former Prime
Minister Rajiv Gandhi had succeeded in providing reservation for
women in the decision-making process in the panchayat
institutions.
In the circumstances, there was no reason why there could be no
success in providing reservation for women in Parliament and
State legislatures.
He said women should be aware of various provisions of
legislation relating to their welfare. Was there any atrocity on
them, they could seek help from the human rights commissions.
Mr. Ramachandran said the campaign was aimed at creating an
awareness among the women in villages of their rights. He
suggested that a single window system be introduced to make
available forms for the physically handicapped to gain the
benefits of government schemes. Now, a handicapped person had to
contact, in vain, several authorities to get the forms.
The Social Welfare Minister, Mr. A. Kasilingam, said there could
be no bar for women to get education and the evils against them
should be brought to the notice of authorities.
Mr. M. Visweswaran, member, Advisory Committee of the Youth
Welfare Project, wanted women to keep abreast of the measures
meant for their welfare.
