Of hues and sizes

PONDICHERRY, AUG. 20. With the Vinayaka chaturthi just two days
away, artisans in Pondicherry are working round the clock to get
ready the idols for the festival.
One can come across different models of Vinayaka idols made in
plater of Paris, papier mache and clay.
Mr. D. Udhyakumar, leading a group of artisans in the Vinod Arts
at Navarkulam, says he has received orders for papier mache
idols, from within Pondicherry and far-off places such as
Bangalore, Vijayawada, Krishnagiri and Naidupet.
The height of idols ranges from 5 to 15 feet.
A batch of 15 artisans are engaged in making the idols.
Mr. S. Gurumoorthy, a traditional artisan, who has opened an
exhibition of Vinayaka statues in the Vedapureeswarar temple
here, says the idols are available in different designs and
heights. A good number of people visits the exhibition.
This apart, the clay idols are made on the pavements in and
around the town.
