LS nod for Bill on freezing seats
NEW DELHI, AUG. 21. The Lok Sabha today passed a Constitution
Amendment Bill, extending the current freeze on the number of
seats in the Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies till 2026 but
providing for fresh delimitation to alter the size of the
constituency.
The Constitution (91st Amendment) Bill, 2000, approved with 297
voting in favour and two against, also proposes to refix the
number of seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes and the
Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies on the
basis of the population ascertained at the census for 1991.
In his reply to the discussion on the Bill, the Law Minister, Mr.
Arun Jaitley, said the amendment was brought as a motivational
measure to enable the State Governments to pursue the agenda for
population stabilisation.
