17 killed in LTTE attack on police station
By Nirupama Subramanian
COLOMBO, AUG. 21. At least 17 people including 15 policemen and
two civilians were killed and 18 wounded when a police station in
the eastern Sri Lankan district of Ampara came under heavy attack
by the LTTE in the early hours of today. All the wounded were
policemen. Four of them were said to be in a serious condition.
The military spokesman, Brig. Sanath Karunaratne, said LTTE
casualties were ``high''.
The police station, in the Central Camp village, 10 km from
Ampara town and 350 km east of the capital, came under attack a
little after midnight. A statement from the Defence Ministry said
all communication channels with the police station were lost
immediately. A nearby camp of the Special Task Force (STF), an
elite division of the police also came under fire.
