Five of family die in wall collapse
By Our Staff Correspondent
DAVANGERE, AUG. 21. Five members of a family died in a wall
collapse owing to incessant rainfall at Kanive Bilachi village in
Basavapatna Hobli in Chennagiri taluk in the early hours of
Tuesday. Two women and two children were among the dead.
The names of the dead were given as Hanumanthappa, a labourer,
his wife, Sakamma, his mother-in-law, Yellamma, his son, Haleshi
(4), and daughter, Shruthi (8).
The Janata house in which Hanumanthappa and his family were
residing collapsed at about 4.30 a.m. and the five died
instantaneously. Neighbours, who came to rescue the family,
removed the debris but their efforts came to naught when they
found that the family members had breathed their last.
Shruthi was studying in fourth standard while Haleshi had joined
school this year.
The villagers were being shifted as there was seepage in the
canal passing through it. Many people shifted sometime ago and
another 250 people had to shift. Owing to financial constraints,
some people remained in the village despite the danger. It turned
out to be fatal in the case of Hanumanthappa.
On receipt of information, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. K.
Shivaram, the Chief Executive Officer of the Davangere Zilla
Panchayat, Mr. Prabhakarappa, and the Superintendent of Police,
Mr. Narayan Nadumani, rushed to the village to pay compensation
to the bereaved family.
The Deputy Commissioner, however, found himself in a fix on whom
to hand over the cheque as the entire family had perished. Mr.
Shivaram and the officers returned to the headquarters without
issuing the cheque.
