NIC wants police to be impartial

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 21. The State-level National Integration Council (NIC), which met with the Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, in the chair here on Tuesday, opined that the persons responsible for communal incidents could be brought to book only if the police became more independent and impartial.

Communal amity, it felt, could be maintained only with the combined efforts of all political parties. Persons breaching the law should be isolated irrespective of their political affiliations and punished.

The meeting suggested that Onam and the Independence Day be celebrated as national festivals. It also proposed that NICs be formed at district and panchayat levels also.

The Chief Minister suggested that the political parties and communal organisations seriously consider drawing up of a code of conduct for themselves to prevent escalation of casteist and communal tensions.

The meeting was attended, among others, by the MLAs, Mr. K.P. Rajendran, Mr. Johnny Nelloor and Mr. A.C. Shanmughadas, Mr. T. Sivadasa Menon, Ms. Sugathakumari, Prof. N.M. Joseph, Mr. K.P. Kunhikannan, Mr. Ramachandran Kadannappally, Mr. K.C. Vamadevan, Mr. G. Sugunan, Mr. Arackal Balakrishna Pillai, Mr. T.S. John, the Director General of Police, Mr. R. Padmanabhan, the Director General of Police (Intelligence), Mr. K. K. Joseph, the Principal Secretary (Home), Mr. Satyanarayana Dash, and the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mr. Gopalkrishna Pillai.
