Festival brings them grief

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, AUG. 21. The family of Mr. Kati Byrappa of Dobbspet on Tumkur Road is undergoing trauma for the second consecutive year on the eve of Ganesh festival.

Last year, a member of the family committed suicide.

Mr. Ashok (28), son of Mr. Byrappa, told The Hindu that Ganesh festival had been bringing misfortune for the family. He narrated how the dacoits hit all members of his family on Tuesday. Mr. Ashok, who was sobbing uncontrollably, had returned from the hospital where his sister, his father and his wife are convalescing.

However, Mr. Shadakshari, lecturer and brother-in-law of Mr. Ashok, told The Hindu that the family was known for celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in a big way, although they did not install the idol at home.

He said that his wife, Ms. Shubhamangala, had bought new clothes for their two-year-old daughter, Chethana, and had gone to her parents' house on Monday. Mr. Shadakshari, who lives in a farmhouse at Nagavalli on Tumkur-Kunigal Road, had planned to join his wife in celebrating the festival on Wednesday.

Mr. Shadakshari, who saw the ransacked house of his in-laws, was shocked to see his daughter's clothes soaked in blood. The dacoits had spared her as she sat quietly near her injured mother and grandparents.
