Samata demands security for sex workers

NEW DELHI, AUG. 23. The Samata Party today expressed apprehension about the security of the sex workers involved in the ``so-called sting operations'' of Tehelka and demanded adequate security for them.

``We are worried that these people (Tehelka) may now try to cause physical harm to the prostitutes they involved in the so-called sting operations,'' the Samata Party general secretary and spokesman, Mr. Shambhu Shrivastava, said, as allegations flew thick and fast between the NDA ally and the web portal. ``We do not see any reason why those hapless women should not be provided with security,'' he said.

In a new twist, the Tehelka web portal today alleged that a former Samata Party functionary had himself offered sex workers to its reporter who had posed as an arms dealer during the website's sting operations.

Mr. Tejpal, CEO of the portal, claimed that they had found new material in the tapes wherein a former Samata Party functionary was allegedly seen ``pimping for girls''.

``He not only offered girls to our reporter, who was posing as an arms dealer, but also presented them to him (the journalist),'' Mr. Tejpal said.
