Buddhadeb backs T.N. in police transfer issue

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG. 23. In support of the stand taken by the Tamil Nadu Government, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has written to the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, asking the Centre to reconsider the issue of transfer of three IPS officers. ``I share the anxiety expressed by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu over this disturbing development since it is a matter of concern to all the States of the Union. All India service officers, unlike those in the Central services, are not officers of Government of India.

They are appointed by the Central Government primarily for serving in different States and are borne on respective State cadres,'' he said in his letter, a copy of which was forwarded to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa. Mr. Bhattacharjee further pointed out that the ``peremptory order'' on the part of the Centre, ``particularly in the background of some recent incidents in Tamil Nadu'', was bound to raise serious misgivings about the intention of the Centre. It was in the nature of a ``severe assault'' on the Centre-State relations.

He said the norms and conventions established over the years in the matter of deputation of All India Service Officers to the Government of India should be strictly followed.
