By K.T.Sangameswaran

CHENNAI, AUG. 23. The city police have registered a case against `Sun TV' for charges including criminal conspiracy and wanton provocation with intent to cause riot, in connection with the events surrounding the arrest of the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, on June 29/30. The FIR was registered by the North Beach Police Station following a complaint given by Mr. M. M. K. Mohamed Ibrahim of Keezhakarai. The complainant alleged that ``distorted news'' was telecast ``continuously with the sole aim of creating hatred in the minds of the public''. He alleged that the offence was punishable under section 124 A IPC (sedition).

Mr. Kalanidhi Maran, managing director, ``and others of Sun TV'' have been cited as accused in the FIR registered for offences under 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 417 (punishment for cheating) and 153 IPC (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot).

Mr. Ibrahim said he and his friend stayed in a mansion on Moore Street, Mannady here, from June 29 to July 4 and alleged that the channel edited the events, inserted dubbing voice and misrepresented the entire facts.

Mr. Justice Malai. Subramanian of the Madras High Court today reserved orders on Mr. Ibrahim's petition. The prosecution informed the court that a case (crime number 714) had been registered by the North Beach police on August 21.
