Vinayaka Chathurthi rallies allowed in Chennai
By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau
CHENNAI, AUG. 23. The Chief Minister, Ms.Jayalalithaa, has
granted permission for various Hindu outfits to take out Vinayaka
Chathurthi processions in the city. The processions are being
taken out on August 25, 26, 31 and September 2.
The Chief Minister told presspersons today that the decision was
taken after the organisers gave an undertaking that there would
be no violence. Earlier, she held discussions with senior
government officials, including the Chief Secretary.
Representatives of various Hindu outfits met the City Police
Commissioner, Mr. K. Muthukaruppan, and assured him that there
would be no violence.
``No permission is required for religious processions'', Mr.Rama
Gopalan, State organiser, Hindu Munnani, told reporters earlier
at Vellore today. He said that as per the law, there was no need
to obtain permission for marriage, funeral and religious
processions.
The State organiser of Shiv Sena, Mr. G. Radhakrishnan, who
earlier threatened to take out the procession despite the ban,
welcomed the government decision. Banning the procession would
have hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus, he argued,
giving the assurancethat the public would not be put to any
hardship.
