CM inaugurates MRI scan at GH

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG. 23.

The Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, today inaugurated MRI scan facilities for the Government General Hospital and the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, at the GH this morning.

The machines, the first to be installed in Government Hospitals, have been procured at a cost of Rs. 4.8 crores each to benefit the people who are not able to meet the expenses of scanning. Private hospitals charged hefty sums for an MRI scan which was beyond the reach of the general public. According to an official release, the machine, procured by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, was the latest available in the market.

The scan centre at the Government General Hospital will charge Rs. 4,500 for every scan. About five per cent of the patients, having a monthly income of less than Rs. 1,000, will be provided the service free of cost, say hospital sources.

For now, the machine will operate between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and will be closed to any emergency service as sufficient trained manpower has not been allocated for the same. However, about 60 scans will be done daily and in course of time more trained persons will be inducted.

A CT scan machine has also been commissioned at the same centre to cater to the in-patients. This has come as a relief for the GH authorities as the existing CT scan machine at the Neurology block is old and worn out due to overloading.
