Maya's Supermodel

YET ANOTHER beauty contest happened this week. Under no garb whatsoever that it was a personality contest. It was a supermodel contest and hence rightly, no questions asked (no question round finale) at the end of it all. Thankfully in a way, for it was well past 11-30 p.m. by the time the contest wound up.

Maya's Chennai Supermodel 2001 was a rich show, in the sense that there were impressive and colourful dance performances by John Britto's Artworx (The group spiced up their set of usual performances when they swung to their latest addition, `Kambakth Ishq') and Shilpa and Group's contemporary dance performance. And there was the Fire Dance by Pon Jothy Krishnan that kept the audience excited, when the performer spewed out fire, literally.

The show choreographed by Sanjay Asrani, had its moments of innovation - the precursor to the finale, for example. The jacket clad male finalists walked in `Josh' style (remember the `Sailaro Sailare' number?), got onto the bikes (in-show product promotion obviously) with the female finalists on the pillion.

But what was most entertaining about the show was the comments from the guys at the back, who came up with timely punchlines. The audience no doubt had a good time throughout the long show.

Nabarun Ghosh and Divya who compered the show, had a wonderful working relationship with the audience in the sense that the audience always seemed to respond to almost every other statement they had to make at the mike.

At the end of it all, almost each of the finalists seemed to have one prize or the other in the sub-categories - Miss Beautiful Skin, Miss Beautiful Hair, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Congeniality, Miss Talent, Mr. Talent, Mr. Personality, Mr. Physique and so on. After all, choreographer Sanjay Asrani did wish that he could give each one of them, an award.

The judges included Shalini Ajit (who actually stayed till the very end), model co-ordinators Biju and Rukmini.

The overall winners:

2nd runner up:

Male - Imran, Female - Aarthi

1st runner up:

Male - Sarfaraz, Female - Sitara
