Two elephants fatally hit by bus
GUWAHATI, AUG.23. Two elephants were crushed to death by a
speeding bus whose driver also died on the spot and several other
passengers were injured in Assam's Kamrup district on Tuesday
night, police said.
The bus, on its way to Barpeta from Dimapur, hit the two
elephants which were crossing the Saraighat bridge near the
Jalukbari-Amingaon crossing, about 20 km from here.
The elephants and the bus driver died on the spot while the other
injured, several critically, have been admitted to the railway
hospital and Guwahati medical college.
Traffic on the Saraighat road-rail bridge, which links the north-
east with the rest of the country, was stopped and cranes were
pressed into service to remove the carcasses from the accident
site.
