NGO demands Tarun Tejpal's arrest
NEW DELHI, AUG. 24. Shakti Vahini, an NGO working for the rights
of sex workers, today described the use of sex workers in the
tehelka.com sting operation as disgraceful and demanded the
arrest of the portal's managing director, Mr. Tarun Tejpal.
``If no action is taken against Mr. Tejpal, then the Government
should legalise prostitution,'' Mr. Ravi Kant, executive director
of the NGO, said here.
Activists working for women's empowerment were shocked that no
action had been taken against the website even two days after the
revelation that Mr. Tejpal had recruited sex workers and provided
their services to Army officials, he said.
It was surprising that neither the National Commission for Women
nor women MPs or leaders such as Ms. Sonia Gandhi, had come out
against the ``vulgar'' use of women, Mr. Kant said.
``If police take no action against Mr. Tejpal, then we will move
the court against him under the Prevention of Immoral Traffic Act
and the Indecent Representation of Women Act,'' Mr. Kant added.
