By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR, AUG. 24. The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, has said that he would respond positively to the request of his Tamil Nadu counterpart, Ms. Jayalalithaa, for the release of water from the Cauvery.

Speaking at a function in Huliyurudurga town of Kunigal taluk in Tumkur district on Friday, he said he had received a letter from Ms. Jayalalithaa stating that the water level in the Mettur dam was declining and that the `Kuruvai' crop in Tamil Nadu was in danger.

She wanted him to facilitate the release of water from the Cauvery.

Mr. Krishna said he was ``duty bound'' by an inter- State agreement to release water.

But the situation in Karnataka was difficult as its reservoirs, including the Krishnarajasagar Dam, were empty.

The State was reeling under a severe drought. He was seized of the matter and ``will have to take a suitable decision.''

He said he expected rain in the Cauvery catchment area soon and that he would be able to respond `positively'.
