Women forums criticise Tehelka

NEW DELHI, AUG. 24. Women's wings of different political parties today condemned the use of women ``as commodities'' by the Tehelka to obtain information.

Terming it as ``demeaning, derogatory and insulting to women,'' the All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) - affiliated to CPI (M) - said, ``it is a totally unacceptable method of investigative journalism''.

In a statement here, the AIDWA general secretary, Ms. Brinda Karat, condemned ``the irresponsible and degenerate behaviour of the concerned defence personnel'' and accused the NDA leaders, including Mr. George Fernandes, of trying to minimise the role of defence personnel ``to save themselves from earlier exposures made by the Tehelka.''

Condemning the utilisation of women to obtain ``information regarding national security'', the BJP Mahila Morcha demanded the ``arrest of the Tehelka chief, Mr. Tarun Tejpal, and his associates under the Immoral Traffic Act.'' It also demanded that the security provided to Mr. Tejpal be withdrawn.
