Nine killed as lorries collide near Chitradurga

CHITRADURGA, AUG. 24. Nine persons were killed on the spot and two were injured in a collision between two lorries on National Highway No. 4 at Maraghatta about 10 km. off Chitradurga city on Friday.

The accident took place at about 4.45 p.m. when a Davangere-bound lorry hit another lorry from Baroda transporting iron material to Bangalore.

Police gave the names of the injured as Mr. Tippeswamy, aged about 60, and his son, Mr. Prakash, from Vinayaka Extension in Davangere. The two were admitted to the government hospital here.

They were in the Davangere-bound lorry which was carrying sheep after unloading bricks in the city. Ten sheep were also killed in the accident.

The dead, including the drivers and the cleaners of the lorries, and `hamalis' of the Davangere-bound lorry, were yet to be identified. Of them, two were Sikhs.

Two cranes were pressed into service to remove the mangled remains of the lorries. However, traffic on the highway was not disrupted as it was diverted on another road.

The Rural Police have registered a case. The Superintendent of Police, Mr. S.Murugan, and the Additional Superintendent of Police, Mr. M.M.Gokak, visited the spot.
