12 slums to get new look under 'Cities Alliance'

HYDERABAD, AUG. 24. The `Cities Alliance', a global partnership
aimed at achieving the promise of well-managed cities, took off
here on Thursday. Under the alliance, a partnership of the UNCHS
(Habitat) and the World Bank, 12 slums would be developed at a
cost of over Rs. 3 crores in the first phase of the programme.
Roads, water supply, drains, community halls, reading rooms,
playgrounds and streetlights would be provided in these slums,
according to the MCH Commissioner, Dr. P.K. Mohanty. He told
presspersons here today after a visit by the City-level
Coordination Committee that the facilities would form part of the
water and sanitation urban management programme. The slums are
Yousuf Bazar, Moosarambagh, Old Feelkhana, Devibagh, Bapunagar,
Muggudeselu, Zeebabagh, Veernagar, Swarajnagar, Shastrinagar and
Bhagavanthpur.
Committee members inspected road-widening works adjacent to the
Narayanguda flyover, at Koti junction, Charminar and
Bathkammakunta. Dr. Mohanty said 29 roads would be widened before
October. They are Gowlipura-Chandrayangutta, Lal Darwaza-
Yakutpura, Dabeerpura-Yakutpura nala, Amberpet lower causeway-
Chaderghat high-level causeway parallel to the Musi river,
Chaderghat jail garden-Lalhazar hotel, Shad cafe-Puranapul
Darwaza, Mohammedi cap market-New flyover Chaderghat bridge,
Narayanguda distilleries road, Jamai Osmania ROB road, Ramnagar
crossroads-Vidyanagar main road and Shankar Mutt-Shivam road.
Others are: Ashoknagar main road-Himayatnagar main road-Indira
Park road, Asifnagar-Noble talkies junction, Vijyanagar colony-
Asifnagar road, Langar Houz junction-Tippu Khan bridge,
Panjagutta junction, Yashoda Hospital road, Nirankari Bhavan-
Visveshwarayya statue, Meter Factory road, Somajiguda main road-
Visveshwarayya statue, Premnagar road-Anandnagar, Jambagh road,
Abids Taj Mahal-King Koti junction, St. Mary's road-Secunderabad
railway station, Subash road, Begumpet main road, Distillery
road, Street No. 9 Tarnaka and Karbala Maidan.
Messrs. Rajeshwar Tiwari, Hyderabad Collector, D. Jagannath Rao
and Karikalvalaven, MCH Additional Commissioners, Syed Omar
Jaleel, Officer on Special Duty, South Zone, M.V. Dinakar Prasad,
DCP (Traffic), and C.V. Anand, DCP, East Zone, accompanied the
MCH Commissioner.
