Musharraf sends formal invitation to Vajpayee
By B. Muralidhar Reddy
ISLAMABAD, AUG. 26. The Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez
Musharraf, has sought a formal meeting with the Prime Minister,
Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, on the sidelines of the U.N. General
Assembly scheduled for the fourth week of September.
The chief spokesman of the Pakistan military, Maj. Gen. Rashid
Quereshi, told The Hindu that Gen. Musharraf had formally
communicated his desire for a one-to-one meeting with Mr.
Vajpayee in New York to carry forward the process of dialogue
that was started in Agra.
The announcement made by Mr. Vajpayee in Lucknow about the
possibility of a meeting with Gen. Musharraf appears to be a
sequel to the formal communication from Islamabad. Pakistan has
been maintaining in the last few days that while it desired a
meeting at New York, it was entirely up to India to decide on the
issue.
