Minister's assurance on Chennai airport
By Our Staff Reporter
KANCHEEPURAM, AUG. 26. The Central Government would extend all
support to the Tamil Nadu Government for construction of the
second international airport in Chennai, Mr. Chaman Lal Gupta,
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, said today.
Talking to reporters here, he also emphasised the need to upgrade
the facilities at the existing airport to make it a ``really
worthwhile international airport.'' There was also need to
upgrade major airports in south India, other than those in the
metros, he said, referring to the Tiruchi and Coimbatore
airports. ``Most airports in the south Indian cities would be
upgraded and it will be ensured that they had connectivity to all
other Indian towns.''
To a question about the ownership of the Jet Airways, he said
there was ``no controversy now.''
On the security aspect, Mr. Gupta said ISI elements were active
and stringent measures would be taken to ensure foolproof
security at airports.
