Protest planned against MNC's 'anti-people' policies

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, AUG.26. The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, Dr. S. Ramadoss, said here last night he would lead an agitation against the multinational company, Ford India, protesting what he called ``anti-people policies'' pursued by the company.

The company overlooked the interests of the local villagers by not providing sufficient job opportunities to them, he alleged. ``If the company does not look into the interests of the local residents, I personally would protest against the company.''

Also, the Kalpakkam area would sit on a powder keg with the proposed construction of the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR). The project would bring more harm than benefits to the region. Though generation of electricity was essential to the development of the economy and the State, it should not be done at the expense of the people, he said.

Dr. Ramadoss was speaking at a public meeting in Thirukazhukundram.

Party worker assaulted

Tension prevailed for a while at Thirukazhukundram when miscreants assaulted a couple of PMK supporters with sharp weapons. After Dr. Ramadoss left the town, a youth, who was seen with bleeding injuries on his left hand and ears, complained that a group of persons assaulted him and sped away. Agitated PMK men demanded that immediate action be taken against the culprits. Meanwhile, a local party functionary also complained of having been hit on his head. Tension built up as party men blocked the road.

The police and the PMK MLA, Mr. Arumugham, pacified them. The injured were sent for medical treatment.
