Rare surgery saves kidney patient
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, AUG. 26. Dr. P.C. Rath, director cathlab and
interventional cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, performed a novel
`renal angioplasty' followed by `stenting' of the artery on a
patient who was surviving on only one donated kidney. The artery
to this kidney developed 99 per cent blockage which resulted in
very high blood pressure and was potentially life threatening.
The procedure involved the dilation of the block in the artery
with the help of a `balloon' and the implantation of a special
stent designed specially for renal artery. The operation was
successful and blood flow to the kidney has become normal and
blood pressure too has come down, according to a press release of
the hospital on Saturday.
Dr. K.S. Nayak, consultant nephrologist, Apollo Hospitals,
managed the case. This operation assumes interest due to the fact
that a cardiologist performed a renal procedure using methods
which are common in heart cases.
