Order in Parliament
Sir, - Your editorial on `Making Parliament to work' (Aug. 25)
and your call to political parties ``to ask themselves whether by
paralysing Parliament and holding it to ransom they are
undermining the very institution of parliamentary democracy''. It
is unfortunate that members of Parliament need to be disciplined
every now and then for smooth functioning and obstruction-free
business in the two Houses.
The Government is spending crores of rupees every five years and
lakhs every day to conduct the proceedings of Parliament. We, the
people, expect our representatives to exchange thoughts and
ideas, not blows. We want them to provide solutions before our
farmers rush to wells to end their lives. Parliament should echo
the problems of the people and help find solutions.
The parties are only paths to reach the hall of Parliament. Once
the MPs take oath, they have to act together cutting across party
lines. The MPs represent the will and aspirations of the people
and their behaviour should inspire the youth of today to look
upon politics as a noble profession to serve the country.
S.A. Srinivasa Sarma,

Sir, - The decision to take unruly MPs to task by suspending them
for one week has come as a whif of fresh air, especially when a
steep hike in their salaries and perks is in the pipeline. With
the promise of semblance of discipline, can we hope that
meaningful proceedings can be witnessed in future?
H.P.Murali,
Bangalore
