Will they be inspired?

Sir, - It was heartening to read about the rare bonhomie between the DMK and the AIADMK in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. This reminds me of the days in Assembly with Kamaraj and Rajaji in the ruling party and C.N. Annadurai and P. Ramamurthy in the opposition. Those were days when the Assembly witnessed intellectual discussions and substantial debates of a high order on topics of importance to the State. Personal prejudices were never allowed to hold sway over vital issues concerning people. One hopes that the two dominant parties and their leaders are inspired by the conduct of the great leaders of the past to act in responsibly. Ms. Jayalalithaa is learned enough to know that vindictive politics will not pay in the long run. One cannot have a quarrel with the Government that is compelled to proceed against individuals on issues that could be substantiated with evidence.

As the leader of the majority party in the Assembly, I hope that Ms. Jayalalithaa would take the lead in ensuring that in future, the Assembly proceedings are not distracted from holding meaningful deliberations. If only she is successful in ensuring the dignified conduct of members of her own party, it would take the wind out of the sails of the opposition forcing them to act with dignity too.

N.S.Sankararaman,

Chennai
