Man Takraf to expand activities

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG. 26. The Chennai-based Man Takraf (India) Pvt Ltd, which is engaged in development, design and erection of mining, material handling and other heavy engineering equipment, hopes to expand its engineering service exports, besides continuing to serve the domestic market.

The company, which is part of the MAN conglomerate of Germany, has expanded its Chennai office with its relocation to a new premises early this week. It hopes to double its engineer- workforce and achieve a turnover of Rs. 25 crores this year.

According to senior officials of Man Takraf and MAN, the high- level skill in engineering available in India and the willingness of Indian engineers to put in long hours in contrast to the rigid work schedule insisted upon by engineers in Germany, besides substantial difference in wage costs, have made India, especially Chennai, an attractive base of Man Takraf operations for serving the global market.

The office, which caters, among other clients, to projects in the Neyveli complex, will play a big role in supply of steel structurals in various countries in association with another group company, DSD.

According to Mr. Karel G. L. Meijers, Managing Director, Man Takraf India, engineering design for a German steel plant and a Mexican power plant had been executed on a pilot basis by the company. The MAN group, including Ferrostaal, had been involved for long in projects of SAIL, navy and private steel plants and coal projects. It had recently been prequalified in a KfW-aided thermal-solar ``Combi'' power project coming up at Mathania in Rajasthan.
