Creative harmony

TO SEE Nadja Lokschin's delicately crafted jewellery set against the calligraphic elegance of Dominic Dube's art work is to witness the creation of interesting and unusual frames. It is a montage of mango, marquise and 'yoni' images crafted into jewellery piecess and painted on flat plastic table top surfaces, each complementing the other's expression and creativity. While Dube's art conjures up basic shapes with mesmeric mantra like repetition - in gold, silver and black, Nadja's jewellery makes sensuous statements using cat's eye and ebony, star ruby and silver, emerald, diamonds, pearls, opal, garnet etc.

The jewellery brings a whiff of European craft traditions, striving for perfection in form and detailing.

For Nadja, whose jewellery has been shown in personal and collective exhibitions in Switzerland, USA, England and Hong Kong, each of her pieces reflects her creative bent of mind.

Nadja Lokschin's jewellery designs include the three motifs of 'amari', marquise and yoni, with the curves of the 'mango' shape predominant in exquisitely crafted ear rings, pendants, brooches etc. The ebony, silver and patak wood 'mango' motif is often set with a single cat's eye, diamond, garnet or tourmaline.

Silver surfaces are often embellished with perforations, calligraphy, gold leaf patterning or minuscule gold 'jaali' beads, all executed with a light, deft touch!

The strikingly elegant pendants combine gold, pearl and citrine with ebony, emerald and garnet. Some make delicate yet strong statements in emerald, ebony 'mango' and 'padak' shapes and a hint of delicate 'Jaipur' gold piece.

The ear rings, chic and uncluttered, come in a wealth of choices. Pearl in shell shapes, ebony and embellished silver 'amris' set off dramatically with a single bold garnet, ruby, moonstone or emerald. Or 'drops' prettily set in a cascade of pearl, gold 'amris' and a sprig of delicate coral! Many of Nadja's pieces are one of their kind creations though the rings and ear rings are duplicated. The rings, mostly in silver, are also exquisitely embellished with a single stone, or with gold leaf patterning.

For the Indian jewellery lover, Lokschin offers a 'different' experience... minimalism marked not by size and 'worth its weight in gold' philosophy, but a certain aesthetic sensibility compounded by impeccable craft, a conceptual perception which creates drama in small dimensions.

Simple, elegant and as Keats would have put it "Weaving harmonies divine, Yet ever new ...", Nadja Lokschin's collection is arresting. More so when seen against the backdrop of Dominic Dube's art.

The collection can be seen at 'Amethyst', Sundar Mahal, Rani Padmavathi Road, Gopalapuram till September 4.
