Govt. climbdown on 'forged' letter
A determined Opposition today forced the
Government to climb down from the high moral ground it had sought
to occupy by ordering a CBI inquiry into the alleged ``forged''
letter written by the Cabinet Secretary.
NHRC differs with Govt. on Durban agenda
Even as the Central Government decided
against the inclusion of caste on the agenda of the World Racism
conference to be held at Durban in South Africa from August 31 to
September 6, the National Human Rights Commission has differed
with the Centre and favoured a discussion on all aspects of human
discrimination.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
told the Lok Sabha today that his Government was in touch with
several organisations and people in its bid to find a solution to

Mamata back in NDA, Fernandes to talk to Farooq
The Trinamool Congress is back in the
National Democratic Alliance, the PMK's re-entry has been
formalised, and once again the services of the NDA convener, Mr.
George Fernandes, are to be used to smoothen the ruffled feathers
of a partner - this time the National Conference, whose leader,
Dr. Farooq Abdullah, on Sunday threatened to walk out of the
ruling coalition. In fact, it was indicated that Mr. Fernandes
might meet Dr. Abdullah here tomorrow to remove the
``misunderstanding.''
Setback to Moopanar's health
The condition of the Tamil Maanila Congress
president, Mr. G.K. Moopanar, who has been on ventilator for a
fortnight now, has suffered a setback, according to the Sri
Ramachandra Medical College hospital here where he is under
treatment.
Dalit woman paraded naked
A Scheduled Caste woman was reportedly paraded
naked at Vanenur village in Bellary taluk of Karnataka on Sunday.
Police have taken seven persons into custody on a complaint from
the woman's brother-in- law.
AIIMS notices to striking staff
The AIIMS today issued notices to all
striking employees, including resident doctors, to join duty
immediately in the wake of the Delhi High Court direction to
resolve the strike in the hospital within 36 hours.
