'Guidelines' likely for Indo-Pak. meet
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, AUG. 27. The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
and the Pakistani President, General Pervez Musharraf, may define
``guidelines'' to move forward the budding Indo-Pak. peace
process during their meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General
Assembly session at New York next month.
According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of External
Affairs, the two leaders are expected to ``pick up the threads''
of their ``inconclusive'' discussions during the Agra summit.
The spokesperson pointed out that Mr. Vajpayee had decided to
meet Gen. Musharraf after Pakistan made a formal request for the
meeting. The Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Mr. Ashraf
Jehangir Qazi, conveyed to the Foreign Secretary, Ms. Chokila
Iyer, on Friday of General Musharraf's desire to invite Mr.
Vajpayee for a meeting during the UNGA meeting at New York.
India's Permanent mission in New York will now tie up the details
of the time and venue for the talks, she observed.
Indian and Pakistani delegations at Agra had discussed possible
formulations and mechanisms to address the Kashmir issue as well
as cross-border terrorism. Prior to the summit, India had
unilaterally announced a series of Confidence Building Measures
(CBMs) including the opening of a road link between Jammu and
Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
