By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI, AUG. 27. The Supreme Court today dismissed in limine
a writ petition challenging the arrest and detention of the
former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, and two
Union Ministers, Mr. Murasoli Maran and Mr. T.R. Balu.
A Bench, comprising Mr. Justice M.B. Pattanaik and Ms. Justice
Ruma Pal, dismissed the petition filed by Mr. Bhim Singh,
Chairman, State Legal Aid Committee (Jammu and Kashmir).
The petition challenging the arrest had sought a direction to the
Tamil Nadu Government authorities to produce all records relating
to the arrest and detention of the three detenus.
The petitioner had alleged that the three detenus ``were
illegally arrested and detained by the State of Tamil Nadu and
the State DGP in a post-midnight operation carried on June 29 at
the behest of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ms. Jayalalithaa,
as an act of vindictiveness with a purpose to humiliate Mr.
Karunanidhi and his supporters, including Government officials
who were associated with him''.
