Choosing a career
WHERE TO GO FROM HERE? A Guide to Educational and Career
Opportunities: A. K. Dasgupta and K. J. Rao; Educational and
Career Information Resource Centre, 503, Paiga Plaza,
Basheerbagh, Hyderabad-500063. Rs. 595.
THIS BOOK of nearly 700 pages will come as a boon to the young
scholars and their parents inasmuch as it gives a very authentic
account of the higher educational institutions in the country and
the courses they offer.
The authors, Mr. A. K. Dasgupta and Mr. K. J. Rao, have done
thorough research and taken painstaking efforts while compiling
the data. It is not surprising when one looks at their
credentials.
The pages on "careers" and "courses" that Dasgupta designed for
the Eenadu newspaper group which he joined after retiring from
the ASCI became highly popular.
The book consists of two parts. Part I "The Backdrop" (14
chapters) includes articles on pathway to course options,
admission procedures, dream merchants of education, fake
institutions, and invasion of foreign education.
Part II deals with courses and career opportunities (Chapter 15
to 52). This throws light on a variety of courses including
actuarial science, architecture and planning, earth sciences,
computer and information technology, environmental sciences,
journalism, mass media and communication, dairy science and
technology, social work and pharmacy.
Universities and colleges in different states of the country
where the courses are offered get detailed treatment. State-level
common admission tests along with the all-India examinations for
different professional courses are also depicted in a
comprehensive fashion.
This excellent book will prove to be of great benefit to
thousands of young people who are badly in need of reliable
information for continuing their studies and planning their
career.
