Onam Week fete begins today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 28. The Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony,
will inaugurate the Onam Week celebrations in the city at a
function organised by the Tourism Department at Kanakakunnu
Nishagandhi auditorium on August 29 evening.
Mr. A.K. Antony will light the traditional lamp that will mark
the start of the celebrations. The Tourism Minister, Prof. K.V.
Thomas, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. V.S. Achuthanandan, and
the Speaker, Mr. Vakkom Purushothaman, will be among those
present.
A `panchavadyam' performance and a light and sound show
conceptualised by Mr. Soorya Krishna Murthi will be the
highlights of the function. The show is based on the work
`Keralthile Pookkal' authored by Prof. O.N.V. Kurup. More than
200 artists will participate in the show.
The Onam Week celebrations will be held in five venues in the
city. Hundreds of artists will participate in the celebrations
that will conclude with a colourful pageant on September 4.
The VJT Hall will be the venue for classical music and dance
performances. Folk art (Natarangu), martial art (ankathattu), and
group dance venues will be at Kanakakunnu. The Jawahar Balabhavan
will be the venue for various performances by women and children.
