More foodgrain for drought-hit States

NEW DELHI, AUG. 29. The Centre today made additional foodgrain
allocations to Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.
Madhya Pradesh was given a special additional allocation of
91,844 tonnes of wheat and 29,437 tonnes of rice for distribution
to drought-affected families in 11 districts. The grains will be
supplied to both Below the Povertyline and Above the Povertyline
Populations at the rate of 20 kg at BPL rates. This allocation
will be for three months.
Under the food-for-work programme, Karnataka has been allocated
one lakh tonnes of grains (57,460 tonnes of rice and 42,540
tonnes of wheat) free of cost for organising various employment
generation schemes in the drought-affected areas through August
and September. Kerala has also been allocated 5,000 tonnes of
rice free of cost under the same programme.
