Quota not on basis of economic status: PM

NEW DELHI, AUG. 29. The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, today ruled out in the Lok Sabha, economic criteria for reservation but said the Government would continue to adopt social status as the basis, to improve the lot of the weaker sections of society.

Intervening briefly during question hour to a query from Mr. Sunderlal Tiwari (Congress) whether the Government would consider even economic background of an individual as a criteria for reservation, Mr. Vajpayee said ``reservation would not be on the basis of economic but social discrimination to enable those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to raise their social status.''
