'Attacks on minorities on the increase'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 29. Mr. E. Ahamed, Muslim League MP from Manjeri, Kerala, today protested against the spate of attacks against the minorities in the country. Raising the issue during zero hour in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Ahamed cited a news report published in The Hindu to make the point that law-abiding and innocent members of the minority community were increasingly coming under attack and harassed by the police.

Referring to the recent incidents in Gujarat, he said two members of the minority community were attacked and done to death.

He also referred to the incident in Mohod where a picnic party of school children, led by the nuns, was attacked by activists of the Bajrang Dal and the VHP.

The police station of the area also refused to accept their complaints.

Mr. Ahamed said that under the NDA Government led by Mr. Vajpayee, the minorities had come under increasing attacks from communal elements and the administration had done nothing to rein them in. He urged the Government to take immediate action to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

PTI reports:

A CPI(M) member alleged that nuns were being targeted by the Bajrang Dal and VHP activists in Gujarat.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Mr. Suresh Kurup said such attacks had gone up after the ``provocative'' remarks made recently by the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, concerning some missionaries.

Case registered

INDORE (MP), AUG. 29. A complaint has been registered by the Jhabua police against some unidentified miscreants at Dahod in Gujarat for allegedly harassing a group of nuns.

According to the Jhabua Additional Superintendent of Police, Mr. R.P. Bisone, the nuns along with the children of an orphanage went to Dahod for a picnic on August 25, when some miscreants allegedly harassed them.

The nuns reported the matter to the police at Jorbat on the same day, he said adding, they alleged in their complaint that the miscreants harassed them and opposed their visit on the plea that they (the nuns) had come to Dahod with an intention of converting people.

A case was registered against the miscreants, Mr. Bisone added.

15 arrested

Fifteen persons have been arrested for allegedly trying to damage a place of worship belonging to a minority community on August 27 in Mehndikheda village in Jhabua district, according to the Collector, Mr. Neeraj Mandloi. A dispute erupted on August 27 between tribals and members of the minority community when the latter were offering prayers at the prarthana ghar.

The former opposed it on the ground that since there was no rain in the area for quite some time so there was no point in praying for it, he said.

However, when a group of priests visited the spot yesterday, a dispute erupted again between them and the villagers in which a priest was injured, Mr. Mandloi told PTI.

Police has filed a complaint against the villagers on the request of Father Thomas of Jhabua, while a counter complaint is also filed by a local against Father Thomas. The villagers have also alleged desecration of an idol by the group during the dispute.

``The situation is tense, but normal in the village,'' Mr. Mandoli said, adding, he is verifying the facts with regards to desecration of the idol.
