Crime prevention squad launched

CHENNAI, AUG. 29. The `yellow brigade', first full-fledged crime
prevention squad on motorcycles was launched by the Chief
Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, today.
About ten motorcycles were pressed into service last month, on an
experimental basis and, based on its success, the scheme was
expanded. The Chief Minister flagged off 50 motorcycles. These
motorcycles would mainly move in inner lanes and congested areas.
She also inaugurated three jeeps and two additional woman
helpline (1091) units.
Ms. Jayalalithaa restored stolen property worth Rs.1.25 crores
recovered by the city police during the last two months to their
owners.
The property included 862 sovereigns of gold jewellery, 16 kg of
silver articles, electronic goods worth Rs. 1.40 lakhs, 65 two-
wheelers, 14 three-wheelers, 12 cars and three lorries and Rs.
seven lakhs in cash.
A co-operative departmental store was opened in the Pudupet Armed
Reserve Police Quarters.
The police personnel, including ministerial staff, contributed
their one day's salary of Rs.23,12,600 to the ``Chief Minister's
Public Relief Fund''. The City Police Commissioner, Mr. K.
Muthukaruppan, presented the cheque to the Chief Minister. The
DGP, Mr. A. Ravindranath, was also present.
