Customs issues notices to 22 officers

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 1. The Customs Department here has issued ``show cause'' notices to 22 officers posted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here at different times in the Olga Korizeva smuggling case involving several senior officials of the department.

The notices, issued by the commissioner of Customs (General), New Delhi, Mr. R.K. Gupta, ask these officials to show cause within 30 days why the silk smuggled into the country from China by a syndicate involving the Uzbekistani woman smugglers, Olga Korizeva and Nazira Ibragimova, and Customs officials, not be confiscated.

The notices further ask them to explain why Customs duty amounting to Rs. 1.75 crores should not be demanded from them along with interest thereon. They were also asked to show cause why penalty should not be imposed on them under Section 112 (a) (b) or 114A of the Customs Act.

Besides, the 22 officials of superintendent and inspector ranks, 23 private persons, including Olga and Nazira, were also issued notices. They were issued after the recording of statements of the officials by the Customs Department.
