Sharad Yadav, Paswan fail to take charge

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2. Mr. Sharad Yadav and Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, the only Cabinet Ministers among the Bharatiya Janata Party's allies in the National Democratic Alliance Government who were shifted out of their portfolios and given new ministerial berths, today failed to take charge of their new assignments.

In fact, Mr. Yadav, who was moved out of the high- profile Civil Aviation to Labour, reportedly met the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, today. What transpired is not known, but it can be assumed that he expressed his unhappiness.

Mr. Paswan, however, indicated that he would take charge of his new portfolio of Coal and Mines tomorrow - he was moved out of Communications. He told presspersons today that he had always given his best to any assignment given to him.

Meanwhile, the BJP Ministers given new portfolios assumed charge today. They included Mr. Pramod Mahajan, given Communications in addition to Parliamentary Affairs and Information Technology that he was holding, Mr. Ananth Kumar, assumed office of Minister for Urban Development, earlier held by Mr. Jagmohan, and Mr. Shahnawaz Hussain, took charge of the Civil Aviation ministry.

Although neither Mr. Yadav nor Mr Paswan have stated on record that they are annoyed or angry, there are enough indications that they are not happy about the change thrust on them.

Ashok Pradhan sworn in

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Khurja in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Ashok Pradhan, was today sworn in Minister of State, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. He had missed being sworn in on Saturday as he was away in Durban as part of the official Indian delegation to attend the U.N. Conference on Racism.

Mr. Pradhan's induction into the Union Council of Ministers is significant keeping in view the coming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. By appointing him, the BJP hopes to make some kind of a dent in the Dalit vote, which so far appears to be arraigned firmly behind the Bahujan Samaj Party. This is Mr. Pradhan's third term in the Lok Sabha. With his induction, the strength of the NDA Government has gone up to 71.
