Hurriyat condemns arrest of leaders

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR, SEPT. 2. The Hurriyat Conference condemned the arrest of its senior leader, Mr. Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, today, and said that it was an attempt to ``suppress the people's movement''. An executive member, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, was arrested on Saturday. A party spokesperson said that there was a deep conspiracy behind these arrests as the Government wanted to cover up its hallow claims, and added that Mr. Sehrai was the ninth leader in the past few months who had been arrested.

``International bodies should intervene in the matter and pressurise the Government to release the leaders'' the spokesman said. The police meanwhile is also on the lookout for another separatist leader and chairman of the National Front, Mr. Nayeem Khan. According to the police, Mr. Khan is involved in an incident in Magam where the Army was attacked.

Mr. Ashok Bhan, Inspector-General of Police, said that there was an increase in civilian killings at the hands of militants which was prompted by the speeches of these leaders. Though he did not name any particular Hurriyat leader, he told The Hindu that ``terror is being spread by these people''.
