Tremor in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 2. Many parts of the city experienced a mild tremor today. The seismology unit of the Meteorological Centre said the tremor was triggered by an earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale with its epicentre in the Indian Ocean.

The tremor, which lasted a few seconds from 7.56 a.m., was felt in the airport, Valiathura, Jagathy, Kesavadasapuram, Fort and Kowdiar. Residents panicked as the shock rattled window panes and vessels. However, no damage was reported. The Amateur Seismic Centre website, which posted preliminary information about the quake, registered the epicentre of the quake 595 km off Tangalla, Sri Lanka.
