Christian Council plea to Sonia

By Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD, SEPT. 2. The All-India Christian Council has requested the Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, to take up at the ``highest level'' the incidents of `Christian-bashing' in Gujarat.

In a memorandum to Ms. Gandhi when she visited Dharampur in Bulsar district to address a rally yesterday, the Council's executive committee member, Mr. Samson Christian, said Christians were the harassed a lot in Gujarat ever since the BJP came to power in the State.

He claimed that the Christians were being discriminated against in Government departments and that the BJP, the Bajrang Dal, the VHP, the RSS and the Shiv Sena were ``hell- bent'' on harassing the community.

Out of the total of 480 incidents of attacks on Christians recorded in the country, Gujarat alone accounted for 65 incidents.
