India remains critical of WTO process
MEXICO CITY, SEPT. 2. India, which has questioned the need for a
new round of global trade talks, softened its stance after an
informal meeting, but remained highly critical of the market-
opening process.
The Union Minister for Commerce, Mr. Murasoli Maran, conceded
some degree of progress was made at the informal World Trade
Organisation (WTO) gathering in Mexico City and said, ``We had a
better understanding of one another.''
Last week, the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, insisted
the ``incomplete agenda'' of the previous round should be sorted
out before a new round was launched. Mr. Maran appeared to ease
off the position that could scuttle plans to launch a new round
at the November meeting of the WTO in Doha.
