AFT mill: trade unions to stage dharna

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 2. The action committee of the All Trade Unions will stage a dharna at the Orleanpet junction near the municipal bus terminal here on September 7 demanding implementation of the recommendations of the Special Industrial Tribunal to benefit workers of the Government-owned AFT mill.

The Tribunal headed by Mr. Durai Kaliarathinam submitted its Report recommending revised wages for the workers. But the Administration took the stand that it would not be expedient to implement the award in view of financial liability. A communication from the committee's president, Mr. V.S. Abishegam, said here on Saturday that the workers would stage meetings at the mill on September 3, 4 and 5 as a prelude to the dharna.

The committee's delegation would meet all Ministers, MLAs, MPs and leaders of political parties to mobilise their support for their agitation.

A plea would also be made to the Chief Minister to send a delegation of the officials, Ministers, MPs and representatives of the trade unions to Delhi to meet the Textiles Minister urging them to take up Rs. 300 crore modernisation programme of the AFT mill.
