Sandipan ends on high note
KOLKATA, SEPT. 2 International Master, Sandipan Chanda of
Goodricke National Chess Academy emerged as the champion in the
International Schlosspark Open chess tournament at Wiesbaden in
Germany, according to the reports reached here.
Chanda, who scored 7.5 points out of a possible 9, beat Denys
Kovalev in the final round. There was a four-way tie for the
second to fifth places on 7 points. GM Mihail Saltaev was placed
second while IM Viesturs Meijers was declared third. Top seed, GM
Viacheslov Ikkonikov and IM Leonid Milov took the fourth and
fifth places respectively.
Despite winning the championship, Chanda could not get a GM norm
as he faced only one GM in the meet. Sandipan already has two GM
norms to his credit. Chanda will be playing in a series of
tournaments in Germany till October. He will also play for the
German team Solingen S.G. in the German team championship.
