Gore maintains lead

KOLKATA, SEPT. 2. Yogesh Gore from Chattisgarh cemented his position on top with a 1.5 lead over his nearest challengers after the ninth round of the second WBCA-FIDE rated chess tournament at the Khudiram indoor hall here on Sunday. Seven players - Amardeep Bartakke (Maharashtra), R. Balasubhramanium (Railways), Aminul Islam (Bangladesh), D.P. Singh (Jharkhand), Pradip Ghosh, Dipanjan Das and Anirban Guha Roy (all Bengal) - shared the second spot with seven points each.

In the two rounds held on Sunday, Gore proved his mettle winning both his matches to consolidate his overnight status as the sole leader. The 35-year-old postal employee scaled R. Preetham Sharma of Tamil Nadu in the eighth round and forced Bartakke to resign in 53 moves in the ninth round.

In a few minor upsets, seventh-seeded IM Shankar Roy of Bengal continued to slip down the ladder as he surrendered to 36th seed Dilip Das in 41 moves. Sixth-seeded C.J. Arvind of Tamil Nadu suffered a defeat against 32nd seed Somak Palit of Bengal while fourth-seeded Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury was held to a draw by 47th seed Anirban Guha Roy.

Poobesh Anand (6.5), Debashish Mukherjee (6.5) drew with Pankaj Joshi (6.5), D.P. Singh (7) bt Saifuddin (6), Jorg Schwalfenberg (6.5) bt Bibhas Bhowmik (5.5), Somak Palit (6.5) bt C.J. Arvind (5.5), Shankar Roy (5.5) lost to Dilip Das (6.5), Shafiq Ahmed (5.5) lost to Laltu Chatterjee (6.5), Roktim Bandyopadhyay (6.5) bt Pranjal Das (5.5).
