Pitts claims Taiwan Open

TAIPEI, SEPT. 2. Andrew Pitts of the United States won the 2001 Taiwan Open on Sunday after the fourth round was cancelled due to heavy rain.

Pitts finished the third round with a total of 197. Singapore's Mardan Mamat placed second with 203, and South Korea's Ted Oh was third, one stroke off in the $300,000 tournament.

The event, sponsored by Taiwan's Acer group, ran from August 30 to September 2 at the 7091-yard course of the Sunrise Golf and Country Club in the northern part of the island.

India's Arjun Atwal finished a commendable joint fourth.

Pitts played one hole on Sunday, the 18th, to finish off his third round, and soon after tapping in for a par and a six-shot lead, he was declared the winner after officials decided that the final round could not go ahead.

Atwal carded an impressive four-under-par 68 in the third round after a par 72 in the previous round and a seven- under 65 in the first round to return an aggregate of 11-under- par 205.

Joining him at the fourth place were Aaron Meeks (U.S., 69-69-67) and Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand (66-71-68). Four strokes behind Atwal was compatriot Jeev Milkha Singh at 209 (69-68-72) alongwith Japanese Sushi Ishigaki (72-70-67).

Davidoff tour leader Korean Charlie Wi, was 11-under this morning but after hooking his tee shot out of the bounds, he carded a double bogey to finish joint 13th.
