Indian juniors finish third

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2. India redeemed some pride with a 3-2 victory against South Korea in the final classification match and finished third in the five-nation junior invitational hockey tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday.

Having led 2-1 at halftime through goals from Rajpal Singh and Verendra Rasquinha, Indian juniors remained one-up against the speedy Koreans, according to the information received from the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF). Tejbir Singh scored a field goal in the second half to give India the much needed win.

The penalty corner conversions, however, remained a flaw for the Indians. The juniors received seven penalty corners, four in first half and three in the second, and converted just one - through Rasquinha. India had lost to Malaysia 1-2, in the final league match on Friday.

Australia takes title

Australia defeated Malaysia 2-1 in the final to clinch the junior hockey title.

Malaysia was the first to score in the 27th minute through a penalty corner. But the lead was short-lived as Australia equalised in the 35th minute through Craig Lynn.

After the breather, Australia sealed the fate in its favour in the 49th minute through Michael Boyce.
