Mahanta pinning hopes on AGP meet

By Our Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI, SEPT. 2. Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who resigned as the AGP president in the wake of a controversy regarding his alleged second marriage, is reportedly making a last-ditch effort to retain his position. The AGP executive which met on August 21, presided over by the acting president, Mr. Biraj Kumar Sharma, decided to convene a general body meeting on September 6.

The meeting is expected to elect a new president who would announce the date for a party conference. Mr. Mahanta seemed to have reconciled himself to the position that he would have to give up the top post and ``work as a primary member of the party.'' Several names are doing the rounds as the likely successor to Mr. Mahanta, the most prominent of them being that of former Education Minister, Mr. Brindaban Goswami.
