Jagmohan shifting a setback

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2.

The shifting of Mr. Jagmohan from the Union Urban Development Ministry might have been due to ``political compulsions'', but it has certainly not gone down well with a majority of Delhiites.

It is no secret that the initiatives taken by Mr. Jagmohan during his tenure as Union Urban Development Minister had unruffled many bigwigs. But it won him applause from a cross-section of people. Mr. Jagmohan has not only been instrumental in reclaiming thousands of acres of encroached government land, but he also gave the city a number of green lungs in the shape of parks and green belts. In fact, his campaign against illegal and unauthorised constructions in the Capital was widely appreciated. The ``party with a difference'' has once again fallen to the whims and fancies of vested interests which are now rejoicing over the ouster of Mr. Jagmohan.

If fact, the BJP MPs from Delhi had met the Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, two days ago and impressed upon him to remove Mr. Jagmohan as his continuance in the present position would spell doom for the party in the MCD polls, due early next year. They pleaded that Mr. Jagmohan had annoyed all sections and the party's image had taken a beating due to the actions.

Though Mr. Jagmohan was subsequently ``sacrificed'', it was in fact the failure of the BJP-dominated MCD to perform during the past four and half years that has resulted in the party facing an uphill task in the forthcoming polls. Also, it is a well-known fact that many of the sitting BJP MPs have pleaded the case of land sharks and the builders' lobby for petty political considerations. In fact, the mess the Capital finds itself in today is the ``gift of these very veteran politicians'' to the people of Delhi. (EOM)
